Art Club - hosted by Spaces of Play
Art club is an open invitation to express, explore, experiment, and engage with different art-making prompts and materials.
We invite you to explore the weekly theme through art-making with many different materials on offer; collage, watercolors, soft pastels, oil pastels, paints and much more.
Unlike typical art-making spaces, we don’t instruct you on how to make art- we encourage you to find what feels right, without the pressure of it looking a certain way.
Each week we offer a prompt, which asks you to self-reflect in a supportive and empowering way. Maybe you are invited to reflect on your strengths, or the things that make you uniquely you. Sometimes you might be asked to focus on the parts of your life that needs a little more energy or support. Each prompt is offered to lift you up and get your weekend off to an empowering start!

“Better” Solo Show & EP Launch by Eden Ariston

Better is a deeply personal exploration of mental health, childhood memories, the impact of a nomadic upbringing, and the profound yearning for a past marked by both joy and adversity. It presents an invitation to reflect on the conundrum of early adulthood; the balancing act of processing and making peace with the past, while somehow also trying to forge ahead and build a future.
Better sees the artist bending the limitations on what to keep and what to throw away. Each work uses materials either found, repurposed, or gifted, highlighting the artists’ constant pursuit of thoughtful and sustainable ways of being. The idea of improvement is explored through the re-enchantment of objects otherwise destined to gather dust on op-shop shelves, or rot away in landfill.
Better navigates the artists’ journey through the turbulent processes of recovery from loss, overcoming pain and doubt, taking control to improve ones’ own odds, and blindly, maybe stupidly, holding on to hope.

“The Better EP was created between 2020 and 2021, during a music course that I took after a mental-breakdown-inspired career leap from architecture & construction. A performer and writer since I was little, this EP is the culmination of a lifelong fire that I have been quietly stoking. Originally crafted under the band name Orange Butter Club and dreamt up by myself and co-writer Leon Antonov, the Better project provided ease from the anxiety of covid lockdowns and some incredibly shitty life stuff. Right after we completed recording and began playing our first string of shows in late 2021/early 2022, I encountered 3 huge family losses in short succession. The project lost momentum, and we never really got it back. I thought Better would never see the light of day, but two years later I’ve finally made the push to share it with the world as a solo project.
While the songs contain similar instrumentation, each feels unique from the last. They equally contrast and complement one another, resulting in a guitar-laden body of work with genre-bending indie pop, neo-soul and aussie soft rock influences shining through each track. The EP title reflects the overarching theme that was unintentionally explored across the four songs; they each convey either a longing for better days or a promise that they are coming.
The irony of writing really uplifting songs like ‘sunny’ and ‘bad days’ before facing some of the hardest years of my life is not lost on me. I like to think that I was unknowingly crafting this gift for future me back then, preparing a soothing melody for her and a reminder that we will make it through.
I hope it can provide this same sense of solace for everyone who hears it.”- stonnii

Conversations & Screenings
JENIN, JENIN - DOCUMENTARY SCREENING. Dir. Mohammed Bakri (2002). Featuring a live conversation with Palestinian activist, Rami Abualsebaa, who was born and raised in Jenin Refugee Camp.
Sunday 28 April. Unassigned Gallery, Brunswick. 6pm start.
All proceeds from this screening will be donated to Olive Kids.
ABOUT THE FILM:
Banned by the Israeli Film Board, 'Jenin, Jenin' captures the aftermath of Israel’s massacre of Jenin Refugee Camp (or the Battle of Jenin) in April 2002, during the second intifada. The director interviews survivors within Jenin, sharing their personal recounts with the world. The documentary exposes Israel’s strategic invasion of the West Bank, and the strength of Palestinian hope, resistance, and fight for liberation. The censorship of ‘Jenin, Jenin’ exposes the harsh restrictions on Palestinian freedom of speech. Following the creation of the film, Bakri was prosecuted by the Israeli government and forced to re-edit. On June 23, 2002, the film’s executive producer, Iyad Samoudi, was killed by IOF soldiers.
ABOUT THE GUEST SPEAKER:
This screening of 'Jenin, Jenin' will be accompanied by a live conversation with Palestinian activist, Rami Abualsebaa. Rami was born and raised in Jenin Refugee Camp, where 'Jenin, Jenin' takes place. He will share his lived experience as a Palestinian Refugee, especially during the 2002 Battle, with honesty and power.
ABOUT THE SERIES:
'Conversations & Screenings' is a collaborative project by Made in Palestine and Unassigned Gallery running March to May, highlighting the power of Palestinian documentary and resistance. Zaatar Popcorn and other Middle Eastern treats are included in ticket price.

'𝓞𝓯𝓯𝓮𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓼' delves into the realms of intimate desires, the grotesque, and the sublime. This exhibition brings together a diverse range of media—sculpture, visual art, film, spoken word, soundscapes, and dance performance—to evoke a sense of wonder and dark enchantment.
Our theme speaks to both the act of artistic creation as a form of offering and the reciprocal exchange that occurs between artist and audience. We offer you our world and hope that you will enter it willingly.
Drawing inspiration from gothic aesthetics, camp sensibilities, and surrealist dreamscapes, the exhibition conjures a space that is at once familiar and strange, unsettling yet alluring. Through the work of our artists, “Offerings” creates an immersive environment that seeks to break down the division between art and audiences—a division all too prevalent in today’s art world.
Curated by Gabriella Bartolo and Sunday Smith.

“Shining Our Light All Over the Place” Solo show by Milli Windshuttle
There are luminosities that cut through the murky lens of fear, human lighthouses to help guide us home. They hold torches to uncover what’s been lost or hidden.
Shining Our Light All Over the Place is a collection of paintings by Milli Windshuttle. The “Our” being those we encounter in our lifetime who inspire us to live authentically, holding keys to unlocked parts of ourselves. Those closest to us and also those we experience from afar. Our unseen guides who whisper encouragement through the darkest hours. Friends, artists, activists or strangers online. You reading this may be an “Our” to somebody. The paintings are extracted from the artist’s continued reckoning with connection and isolation. Windshuttle approaches these concepts through figurative representation, obstructed by and existing within abstract realms. The resulting paintings seek to portray light and bodies connecting in negative space, to reflect that despite our incompleteness, we have the power to illuminate one another.
—
Milli Windshuttle is an oil painter based on the stolen landls of the Wiradjuri and Woi Wurrung people in Narrm. Their practice aspires to bring forth invisible realms into physical spaces, as reflections and reactions to their everyday reality. Through painting Milli is able to visualise optimistic visions of the future and better understand their own relationship to the world.
Shining Our Light All Over the Place by Milli Windshuttle Runs until April 7th

O EAT ME O READ ME SOMETHING ★
O EAT ME O READ ME SOMETHING ★
Brought to you by @dogstarzine
Summer's hot wet tongue is swiftly approaching and we are thinking about heat, about consumption, about bringing what we have and being with each other.
How can we write between and about all the chaos and the shit? How am I supposed to feel good when everything costs exactly fourteen dollars? Why am I so sweaty in the deli aisle and where the fuck are the pitted olives?
What if everything felt better shared? What if the blows land softer when you're holding a bowl of cold tinned apricots in your warm sticky hands? What if you went to the beach instead of just saying you should go to the beach? What if someone you know had parents with an in-ground pool?
Wednesday November 15, at Unassigned Gallery from 6pm, we humbly invite you to join us for an evening of sharing across the table. Bring something to read, or a plate to share, or both if you think you're better than everyone else. Every speaker gets 10 minutes of airtime, which they may use in any way they like. There will be a signup sheet on the night for any last-minute speakers. (*Note: there are limited speaking slots on the night, so if you throw your hat in the ring too late, fear not! You will be automatically added to the waitlist to read at our next event).
We ask that you pay what you can to help cover venue hire costs, whether you can spare a dollar or five or nothing at all, nobody with a ticket will be turned away. Just make sure you book so that we have your name on the list. If ticket sales exceed hire costs, all surplus earnings will be donated to Pay The Rent.
O EAT ME, READ ME SOMETHING is brought to you by Dogstar Zine. We acknowledge and extend our utmost respect to the Elders and sovereign peoples of the land on which we work and meet, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. We support and advocate for Treaty and truth-telling. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
ACCESSIBILITY: There are no stairs in the venue, however the event will be held out the back of the gallery in the open-air garden which is accessible via an alleyway. if you have any further questions about accessibility on the night, please don't hesitate to contact the organisers.
Please register attendance whether you are reading or not, so we can keep track of numbers. This event is pay as you can, whether it be a dollar, 5, or none. No one will be turned away. If the amount raised exceeds production costs, the Dogstar team will be donating the remaining amount to Pay the Rent.

Pretty White Silk - Solo exhibition by Maria Colaidis
pretty white silk, solo exhibition by Maria Colaidis
‘pretty white silk’ explores my fragility, profound ambivalence and grief around the end of a relationship, while simultaneously forming a new relationship with myself.
The series title is inspired by the nursery web spider. The male will present a female with a gift to show the wish to mate; typically food is presented wrapped in pretty white silk. If the female is enticed by the gift they will mate while she unwraps it, however, often it will be empty and the female has been deceived. This story acts like a metaphor for relationships, as we never truly know what we are going to get once it unravels.
Join us on Friday 10th November to celebrate the opening of Pretty White Silk.
This exhibition runs from 10.11.23-20.11.23 F-M 11-4pm

🏡 About the gallery 🏡
Established in 2022, Unassigned Gallery is an artist-run space that seeks to platform new and unseen talent in Melbourne’s vibrant arts scene.
Unassigned Gallery is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where people from all walks of life can feel comfortable and safe to engage with art.
We are lucky to be part of an inspiring creative community, and we aim to give back as much as we can. Unassigned Gallery was born out of a desire to give a platform to artists ‘on the outside’, and to amplify all voices, as so often the art world can feel impenetrable. Driving all our workshops, classes and exhibitions is an aim to keep independent art accessible, educational, and inspiring for all.
💥 This event is for people aged 18+ and photography is not permitted while the class is in session.
💥 All supplies must be left at the studio (you may take your drawings with you).

BE NOTHING BABY book launch
‘BE NOTHING BABY’ by TALK TALK DIE oozes an alternative to patriarchy and a complete upheaval of the binary; ‘a warm no’.
This collection is recognition that nothing in this society is built for you, let alone serves you, and is a conscious, empowering rebuke of all it pretends to offer.
- Millicent Bishop
BE NOTHING BABY is a collection of over 100 pieces of writing from a six year period and a selection of photographs from the water-birth of my first born.
The book will be available at the launch on Friday 28th July. 6-9pm
