Prince Kempster / Feeling a Little Bit Nostalgic
I aim to create work that brings you into the scene and makes you feel welcomed. My hope
is to capture past moments of pure presence and joy.
As a young child my neighbour would host lavish tea parties. To me there was nothing more
exciting than a table full of homemade cakes, scones, cookies, and good company. My work
is deeply inspired by the showmanship of hospitality; the decadence, the sweetness and the
joy of sitting together.
With this series of work I wanted to explore nostalgia. At the start of this journey I was asking
myself if it was possible to enjoy nostalgia without the bitter taste I would get. Without regret
and pain. Through working on this series I find myself more comfortable with that bitter taste.
More understanding and forgiving of the grief wrapped up in nostalgia.
I work with acrylic paints on cradled wood panels. I build in layers, adding colour and form.
